Aquamarine is a beryllium aluminum silicate (belonging to the Beryl group). It has a hexagonal crystal system. Its color is determined by trace elements of lithium, calcium, and fluorine present in the stone's composition.

It is a mineral typically found in pegmatites (igneous rocks with very large granite crystals that often contain rare elements). According to Pliny, "It reproduces the green of the sea in all its purity."

The most significant deposits are in Brazil (Minas Gerais) and Nigeria (Jos Plateau).
