Hematite is an iron ore and one of the most abundant minerals on Earth.

Its crystal system is primarily rhombohedral, often taking the form of kidney-shaped nodules resembling the texture of a brain. It can also occur in a radiated structure—a radiating formation—or in lamellae, known as iron roses.

Its name comes from the red color of its powder, which the ancients compared to the color of blood. "Aima" means blood in Greek.
