Lapis Lazuli is a silicate composed of sulfur, sodium, and aluminum, characterized by inclusions of iron pyrite.

Its crystal system is cubic. Its intense blue color and pyrite inclusions distinguish it from other opaque blue stones, such as lazurite.

It was considered the stone of the pharaohs and was used in the worship of the goddess Isis. The finest lapis lazuli deposits are found in Afghanistan.
