Its name comes from "Upala," which means "precious stone" in Sanskrit. It has an amorphous crystal structure, meaning it lacks a regular, repeating internal arrangement of atoms. Opals are composed of tightly packed microscopic silica spheres arranged in rows. These spheres diffract incident light, causing it to separate into the pure colors of the visible spectrum.

There are three main types of Opals: Noble Opals, Fire Opals, and Common Opals. Noble Opals contain up to 30% water content. Therefore, whether they are rough or cut, it is important to immerse them periodically in quality water to prevent dehydration.
